The Origins of J’ouvert

J’ouvert is a large street party during Carnival in the eastern Caribbean region. J’ouvert is a contraction of the French jour ouvert, or dawn/day break. J’ouvert is celebrated on many islands, including Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Lucia, Anguilla, Aruba, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, Sint Maarten, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, the U.S.. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Feters J’ouvert Troupe, as we extend our vibrant spirits to the community and diverse our creativity by transforming a new and different avenue for Carnival 2016. Our mission is to make you feel like you are part of our Carnival celebration as we provide you with our dedication and commitment in ensuring that we will bring back the tradition of J’ouvert like how it was many years ago.

VI Carnival
​

It’s the biggest party of the year, and each island has its own. St. Thomas carnival culminates in the final week of April. The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952; carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean.
